Technology Teaching Tools

Technology Teaching Tools are short, online, asynchronous modules highlighting a technology teaching tool along with relevant pedagogical implementation strategies. Some of the CIRT Technology Tools discussed below rely on freeware downloads. Prior to utilizing these technologies, you are encouraged to understand the potential risks associated with freeware; see the article "Why Free Software Downloads Aren't Always Safe" for an overview of key considerations.

ShowMe

  • This app can be found in ITUNES. You can use ShowMe to implement the flipped classroom instructional strategy in your class, There are a host of video clips designed by different teachers on a wide range of topics.  Teachers can use existing videos or create their own.  Essentially, this software allows the teacher to write on a ‘white board’ and speak about what is being shown on the screen.  It is easy to use and always available for viewing.  Students can also create their response on a ‘showme’ page which helps ‘less social’ students interact.  There is a free plan, which allows one group at a time, or premium for 4.16 a month which allows 300 hours of storage, unlimited groups as well as a school premium, unlimited plan.  Videos can last as long as 15 minutes, but unclear if there is a maximum time limit.

Pedagogical Ideas

In the classroom, ShowMe can be used in a variety of ways. Some ideas include the following:

  • Internet content - This program is good for online students as they can access a wide range of information. It could also be used in a hybrid system.  This may not work well for higher education students who want to promote research.
  • Collaboration – Teachers can share lesson plans and advice with other teachers around the country.
  • Student engagement -This software Increases student engagement; Educators from over 55,000 schools use ShowMe to flip their classrooms.
  • Personalization - This software personalizes the learning experience as students can also respond to the teacher online.
