Technology Teaching Tools

Technology Teaching Tools are short, online, asynchronous modules highlighting a technology teaching tool along with relevant pedagogical implementation strategies. Some of the CIRT Technology Tools discussed below rely on freeware downloads. Prior to utilizing these technologies, you are encouraged to understand the potential risks associated with freeware; see the article "Why Free Software Downloads Aren't Always Safe" for an overview of key considerations.

PowerPoint

  • PowerPoint Online (formerly PowerPoint Web App) extends your Microsoft PowerPoint experience to the web browser, where you can work with presentations directly on the website where the presentation is stored. Microsoft Office 365 customers with Office Online can view, create, and edit files on the go. While in View mode, if you click the Edit in Browser button on the PowerPoint Online toolbar, PowerPoint Online will go into Edit mode. The PowerPoint Editor is a web front-end component that creates a browser-based editing surface, which enables users to work on documents without losing fidelity.  While in View or Edit mode, if you click the Open in PowerPoint button on the PowerPoint Online toolbar, the presentation opens in the PowerPoint desktop app (if Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 or later is installed on the computer).

Pedagogical Ideas

Ideas for application in the online classroom:

  • Create a Group Presentation: Students work collaboratively to create a presentation on an assigned topic. Students can use the audio feature to present their portion and/or utilize the speaker notes section to write out their explanation of the slides.  This will increase student-student collaboration in the online classroom.
  • Create a Visual Album: Teachers can create a supplemental material for visual learners by creating an album using pictures to explain the concept. Audio recording can assist in explaining so that no reading is involved.
  • Design a Review Game: Teachers can create interactive review games for students as a unit wrap-up and/or to prepare for quizzes/exams.  In addition to serving as a study aid/test preparation, this would increase students’ interest or attention.
  • Design a Virtual Field Trip: Create a presentation a location is “visited” that is relevant to the week’s topic. This can be teacher or student created to enhance presentation of information.
  • Develop a “Create Your Own” Story Adventure: Students can create a story where the audience chooses where it goes by selecting from a few scenarios. Hyperlinks in the presentation tell what happens next when it is selected.  This will promote critical thinking and creativity.
