Technology Teaching Tools

Technology Teaching Tools are short, online, asynchronous modules highlighting a technology teaching tool along with relevant pedagogical implementation strategies. Some of the CIRT Technology Tools discussed below rely on freeware downloads. Prior to utilizing these technologies, you are encouraged to understand the potential risks associated with freeware; see the article "Why Free Software Downloads Aren't Always Safe" for an overview of key considerations.

PlayPosit

  • Backed by AT&T and Stanford’s startX, PlayPosit is an online learning environment to create and share interactive video lessons. Teachers begin with any online video (screencasts, Khan Academy, TED, etc.) and transform what is traditionally passive content into an active experience for students, with time-embedded activities. Awarded the “best open educational resource”, PlayPosit is designed for K-corporate, flipped, and blended environments. Formerly known as eduCanon.

Pedagogical Ideas

In the classroom, PlayPosit is a web and Chrome-based interactive video and assessment tool

  • Interactive video – Teachers can create interactive video lessons using already established videos or developing their own videos. Instructors can add pauses at regular intervals to ask questions to encourage more student activity. PlayPosit allows instructors to personalize the learning experience.
  • Formative assessment – Students can be asked multiple choice or short answer questions up to 120 character responses. These creative lessons can help students apply what they are learning to the objectives and provide needed information to instructors. This technology can foster test preparation and serve as a study aid.
  • Engagement - Embedded assessments encourage more active participation from students. Overall, engagement will depend on the depth and quality of both the videos and the assessments used. Some students could be put off by too many breaks in a video.
  • Easy to use – Instructors can use any of the over 200,000 bulbs (interactive videos) made or create their own. The features are basic and useful and integrates with a variety of learning management systems
  • Presentation enhancement – Not only can teachers use this, but students can create video presentations pausing to offer relevant information. This could be a good alternative to using standard presentation application like PowerPoint or Prezi.
