Technology Teaching Tools

Technology Teaching Tools are short, online, asynchronous modules highlighting a technology teaching tool along with relevant pedagogical implementation strategies. Some of the CIRT Technology Tools discussed below rely on freeware downloads. Prior to utilizing these technologies, you are encouraged to understand the potential risks associated with freeware; see the article "Why Free Software Downloads Aren't Always Safe" for an overview of key considerations.

  • Padlet is a free, online “virtual wall” similar to Pinterest. It is described as “like a piece of paper, but on the web.” A web-based, virtual bulletin board that can be accessed by a number of people. Privacy settings, which include a password-protected option, can be chosen by the creator. Enhancements such as sticky notes, text, audio, and video can be used to add flair to the Padlet.

In the classroom, Padlet can be used in a variety of ways. Some ideas include the following:

  • Book Reviews – Classes who are reading a novel or text together can use Padlet as a venue to share thoughts on the assignment(s) as they read. Instructors can then present the board in a face-to-face or virtual session in order to recap the thoughts and discussions as they transpired.
  • Topic Summary – Instructors may use Padlet to present a summary on a particular topic in class, or to present instructions for an upcoming project, in a visually pleasing manner. Instructors can insert text, photos, graphs and other learning tools and share the finished product with students prior to a test or discussion.
  • Discussion/sharing forum – Instructors can use Padlet as a tool to “kick off” a discussion on a particular topic, and students can post their opinions on that subject. For English or Writing instructors, this is a great building block for instruction on writing opinion pieces or persuasive essays.
  • Questions Board – Students can use a “questions” board created by the instructor and anonymously post questions. Traditional instructors can address these questions during face-to-face meetings, and online instructors can present
