Technology Teaching Tools

Technology Teaching Tools are short, online, asynchronous modules highlighting a technology teaching tool along with relevant pedagogical implementation strategies. Some of the CIRT Technology Tools discussed below rely on freeware downloads. Prior to utilizing these technologies, you are encouraged to understand the potential risks associated with freeware; see the article "Why Free Software Downloads Aren't Always Safe" for an overview of key considerations.

Pedagogical Ideas

In the classroom, this technology can be used to:

  • Dynamic Study Modules – This allows students to answer questions before and while learning material. They can receive feedback in real time, and based on their answers, the system guides them into what material to study and provides further testing. Students cycle through a process of test, learn, and retest until they have mastered the material. The following link provides an overview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ETWF9S5KwU
  • Adaptive Study Plan – The adaptive study plan assesses students’ work continuously and targets strengths and weaknesses. It provides practice designed to help remediate deficiencies. A discussion with examples can be seen as: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwMw6zmdeTI
  • Digital Interactives - Digital interactives are delivery vehicles for key concepts. They include optional interactive homework activities. An example of the use of digital interactives for an economics course can be found at: https://www.pearsonmylabandmastering.com/northamerica/myeconlab/educators/features/index.html
  • Grader Projects – This feature allows assignments to be completed in a Microsoft application, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Access and then uploaded for grading. Grading is completed automatically with feedback provided. This allows students to get practical experience with a particular Office platform. The concept might be extended to other kinds of platforms and technologies.
  • Badging – A badge represents a skill or achievement that has been mastered. It is currently used in MyLab for Microsoft Office applications. But the idea might be extended to other kinds of skills and competencies.
