• EdPuzzle is a software that allows one to edit videos from a variety of places to personalize them to meet specific needs. For this application, one can take videos from YouTube, Kahn Academy, Vimeo, and several other places or upload their own video. The crop feature allows the user to focus the attention of the viewer on a particular segment of the video. EdPuzzle gives the editor an opportunity to add commentary as well as create quizzes. These features can enhance the interaction that viewers have with the videos that are edited/created. EdPuzzle requires instructors to create specific channels and then invite students to attend. Invitations can be managed by the instructor, or a link/code can be provided so students can opt in if they wish.

Pedagogical Ideas

In the classroom, EdPuzzle can be used several ways:

• Formative Assessments – Instructors create – or find – videos around the week’s topic/objective and edit it to check their students’ understanding of the material. Within the edit, the instructor can provide personalized narration and or insert comment and questions. The comments can provide further detail and direction to resources, while feedback on the quiz is rolled up to instructors to identify and address the gaps in understanding. This use would provide personalized feedback, and offer students to be engaged in the classroom in a kinetic way.
• Video Quizzes – Instructors create quizzes based on selected material within a quiz. The instructor would have the option of using an existing video creating one. The quiz feature incorporates multiple choice as well as open-ended questions that immediately provides feedback to the student, and records data the instructor can access at any time.
• Video Presentations – Instructors create video lectures for their assignments and or concepts for the week. While EdPuzzle has a variety of videos that one can choose from, it does provide the option for uploading videos that the instructor has previously created. If one has created video lectures for their course, this software would allow instructors to add additional commentary – to address gaps in understanding that have presented themselves over time – as well as questions. These questions could incorporate a variety of things from checks of understanding, to additional notes or resources for the student to review.
• Student Feedback – EdPuzzle offers students an opportunity to add comments to videos that the instructor has assigned for the course. This opportunity increases the students’ opportunity to interact with the video beyond watching it, and enhancing engagement with the material they are being asked to review.
• Student Videos Tutorial – A student creates their own video for a special event or central competency of the course that is being reviewed. Creating the video would require them to engage with the material in a meaningful way that fosters critical thought and creativity. The video could be shared among the classmates that have subscribed to the EdPuzzle channel the instructor has established.
