Technology Teaching Tools

Technology Teaching Tools are short, online, asynchronous modules highlighting a technology teaching tool along with relevant pedagogical implementation strategies. Some of the CIRT Technology Tools discussed below rely on freeware downloads. Prior to utilizing these technologies, you are encouraged to understand the potential risks associated with freeware; see the article "Why Free Software Downloads Aren't Always Safe" for an overview of key considerations.

Pedagogical Ideas

In the classroom, Creately can be used in a variety of ways. Some ideas include the following:

  • Map It - Students use Creately to mind map the lesson notes. This helps them connect ideas in a non-linear fashion. This type of thought process is excellent for non-sequential learners. Distance learners can benefit from using this tool to break down written course notes or lectures.
  • How To - Students select a project that they will be demonstrating to the class. This could be as simple as making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or as complex as building a model railroad. Students must deliver an oral demonstration of their project and provide the class with the process map generated in Creately. Pair this with video and audio tools found in the Technology Tools section of the CIRT website to connect distance learners to the class.
  • Build-a-Float - In preparation for the big homecoming parade, use the Gantt chart feature of Creately to create the project plan. This is a simple way to keep the project on track.
  • Teacher Exclusive: Year-long Lesson Map - The Gantt chart feature in Creately works well for creating your lesson maps for the upcoming school year. Keep them updated easily as well!
