Thoughts on Teaching
It’s all About the We in the Online World of Course Facilitation~ by Dr. Stephanie Sencil-White
This post is written by Dr. Stephanie Sencil-White and explores different ways to engage online students no matter what their learning style.
Dr. Stephanie Sencil-White writes:
"Learning is about us; it is not about the I; it is not only about the you; but about the we~ In order for you to know what you need to succeed, and for me to know what that is for you to be successful, we need to work collaboratively in this course. These are usually the first few sentences in my educational philosophy statement embedded in my course syllabus each term. First, because it is true for any online course I teach; and, second, because an…
Results from nation-wide survey concerning perceptions of both ground and online courses by faculty and students.
The popularity of online education has increased dramatically in the past decade. Most university has some form of online education. Although the reasons for instituting online programs vary, the studies relating to the perception of online education at the college level by both faculty and students have been minimal (Murdock & Williams, 2011). The Hot Chalk Education Index (2013), however, recently conducted a survey of students and faculty to ascertain their perceptions of online…
What are the roles and responsibilities of the online instructor as compared to ground-based instructors.
One of the pertinent issues facing online faculty is to understand what our students; expectations are concerning our roles and responsibilities within the classroom setting. Although many faculty may understand the traditional face-to-face classroom paradigm, given that is what many faculty experienced in their studies, the online environment in many aspects present new challenges and new opportunities. The traditional face-to-face classroom-setting paradigm of teaching typically involves a…

E-mail verses Voice-to-voice
I recently complete a qualitative case study concerning the effective use of communication during periods of organizational change. One of the central themes that developed during my analysis was the use of different communication modality for conveying different type of information. The findings indicated voice-to-voice modality of communication was best for nuanced or complicated information that had long-term consequences. E-mail communications was preferred for information less nuance and…
What the controversy in the Atlanta Public Schools can tell us.
As many of you have heard, there may have been wide spread cheating committed by teachers and administers in the Atlanta Public School District according to reports. The scandal involves teachers and administration changing the incorrect answers students gave on standardized tests to the correct answers in an effort to improve the district's test scores. Although it may take months (perhaps years) for the particulars of the alleged scandal to become public, the situation brings up several…
The Benefits and Drawbacks of Social Media in the Online Classroom
How to use the "social media effect" to your advantage
Perhaps we are looking at things wrong... Maybe managing energy not time is the key to success. That's what Tony Schwartz argues in his article "Manage your energy, not your time."
I just got done reading the book "The Power of Full Engagement" in which authors Tony Schwartz and Catherine McCarthy posit that we need to manage our energy not our time. Similarly in his article for HBR Schwartz notes that it is important to develop rituals that allow our brains and bodies to recover by working in alternating phases of high focus and then rest.
James Wetherbe from HBR Blogs argues that tenure is a liability for institutions of Higher Education. Wetherbe notes that tenure started as a way to protect the academic freedom of professors in religious institutions, but has now become more about job security than protection against being fired for unpopular ideas. Wetherbe writes that tenure hurts knowledge production, teaching, and Universities in general.

How to improve communication in the online classroom
As online instructors, we typically communicate to our students through an asynchronous manner. This has traditionally been the main mode of communication the online realm, and it has several pertinent advantages compared to synchronous communication. The asynchronous mode affords our students an optimal level of convenience given that many of them are nontraditional students, attempting to balance both work and family alongside their studies. The mode allows students the opportunity to reflect…
