James Wetherbe from HBR Blogs argues that tenure is a liability for institutions of Higher Education. Wetherbe notes that tenure started as a way to protect the academic freedom of professors in religious institutions, but has now become more about job security than protection against being fired for unpopular ideas. Wetherbe writes that tenure hurts knowledge production, teaching, and Universities in general.
