Become a One-Take Wonder: Short Video Modules for Hands-On Project-based Learning

Alison King is Assistant Professor of Digital Design in GCU's College of Arts and Media. She's an early distance learning pioneer with over 20 years of experience delivering content in digital formats. A firm believer in the value of handicraft and mastery of materials, King was challenged by the "distance" in distance learning while teaching from home during the pandemic, and so started recording overhead demonstrations of key skills her department's freshmen needed to master in a short, modular format. When not teaching at GCU, King is an avid design historian and social media influencer in Phoenix, AZ. She engages the community through public education, tours, special events, and research at ModernPhoenix.net and @modernphoenix.

Abstract

Stop over-thinking it and start recording it! Digital Design Professor Alison King shares a rationale, methodology, tips, and tricks for using largely unscripted short-format video to enhance skill-based classroom instruction. Two examples of using an overhead document camera to record manual skills and software procedures will be shared. With a little practice and a lot of letting go, you too can become an efficient "One-Take Wonder".
