Building Relationships and Community


Dr. Crystal McCabe is a Full Professor in the College of Education. She has been teaching for Grand Canyon University since 2013.  She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, a Master’s degree in Special Education, a Master’s degree in Professional Counseling, and a Ph.D. in General Psychology with an emphasis in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. Crystal has a passion for building relationships and community in the classroom. She is married to the “other” Dr. McCabe and they have 2 sons, Gavin and Noah. In 2020, Crystal was the co-recipient of the Shauna Schullo Award for Best Distance Teaching Practices.


Abstract

Building relationships and community in a classroom is not a new concept, but with more and more students taking their learning virtual, there is a heightened importance to making intentional efforts towards strategies that increase relationships and community virtually. With already limited time, effective and easy strategies are what faculty need to help them add this to their to-do list. This presentation will focus on two specific strategies that this faculty member has been using for a couple of years with continued success.
