SoTL Research Foundations: Developing a Need for Research
Checklist for SoTL Research Writing
1. Conducting a Literature Review:
- Identify relevant databases and search terms.
- Perform an exhaustive search to ensure novelty.
- Summarize findings and identify gaps or limitations.
Example: Search for articles on student engagement in traditional and blended learning environments to find gaps in the literature.
2. Selecting a Theoretical Framework:
- Review theories related to the research problem.
- Compare different theories to select the most appropriate one.
- Ensure the selected theory dictates the variables and measurement instruments.
Example: Choose Self-Determination Theory to explain student motivation and engagement.
3. Applying Quantitative Methodology:
- Formulate hypotheses based on the theoretical framework.
- Use valid and reliable instruments for data collection.
- Plan for statistical analysis to test hypotheses.
Example: Use surveys to measure engagement and t-tests to compare engagement levels between teaching methods.
