Checklist for SoTL Research Writing 

1. Conducting a Literature Review:

  • Identify relevant databases and search terms.
  • Perform an exhaustive search to ensure novelty.
  • Summarize findings and identify gaps or limitations.

    Example: Search for articles on student engagement in traditional and blended learning environments to find gaps in the literature. 

2. Selecting a Theoretical Framework:

  • Review theories related to the research problem.
  • Compare different theories to select the most appropriate one.
  • Ensure the selected theory dictates the variables and measurement instruments.

    Example: Choose Self-Determination Theory to explain student motivation and engagement.

3. Applying Quantitative Methodology:

  • Formulate hypotheses based on the theoretical framework.
  • Use valid and reliable instruments for data collection.
  • Plan for statistical analysis to test hypotheses.

    Example: Use surveys to measure engagement and t-tests to compare engagement levels between teaching methods.
