Distinguished Faculty Scholar AwardThe Distinguished Faculty Scholar Award is an annual award presented to GCU faculty members who exhibit extraordinary accomplishments in research or creative scholarship through teaching, discovery, scholarly engagement, and service. Distinguished Faculty Scholars are faculty whose body of scholarship and current level of scholarly activity warrant distinction within the university community. |
Once named a Distinguished Faculty Scholar, recipients maintain the distinction for the remainder of their tenure at GCU. Distinguished Faculty Scholars are recognized on the University website, receive an award plaque and a $1,000 monetary award.
Eligibility
Eligibility is open to both fulltime and adjunct faculty or staff teaching in either campus-based or online formats. Nominees must have at least one calendar year of academic service at GCU prior to nomination for the Award.
One Distinguished Faculty Scholar Award is designated to each college:
- College of Humanities and Social Sciences
- College of Science, Engineering and Technology
- College of Theology
- College of Doctoral Studies
- College of Education
- College of Fine Arts and Production
- College of Nursing and Health Care Professions
- Colangelo College of Business
No individual may receive the Distinguished Faculty Scholar Award more than once during their tenure at GCU.
Scope of Award
The attainment for which the candidate is to be honored shall have occurred or culminated during the five years preceding the nomination for the award. The award will be made solely on the basis of scholarly or creative achievement. Wide recognition by the academic community beyond GCU is essential. The award should be based on a body of achievement rather than a particular piece of research, creative work, or other achievements. A substantial portion of the achievement shall have been accomplished as a faculty member of GCU.

The criteria for evaluating nominations for the Distinguished Faculty Scholar are developed by faculty committees composed of representatives from each college.
- Quality of the nominee's scholarly or creative achievements, with emphasis on originality, imagination, and innovation.
- Impact on the nominee's discipline or field of study.
- National and international scholarly reputation.
- Contribution to undergraduate and/or graduate education.
- Contributions to the university, profession, and wider community.
Nomination Procedure
Annually in April, the Provost will invite nominations from faculty and administrators. Nominations may be made by any member of the University community including retired faculty members. Faculty may wish to nominate a colleague or colleagues; self-nomination is also acceptable. All nominations must be supported by at least two sponsors, at least one of whom must be from within the University.
Awards Ceremony
The awards will be presented annually during the faculty program held each August.
