Generative AI and SoTL: Ethics and Privacy

Privacy and Security

The use of ChatGPT in SoTL research raises privacy concerns and data protection laws. Users' personal data may be used to train the algorithm or be stored in the system's databases, putting their privacy at risk. Researchers must take steps to ensure that personal data is handled safely and follows data protection laws.

AI relies on large amounts of personalized data, including responses, photos, videos, potentially even recordings. Being able to store the data on secured systems, only accessible to researchers is critical.

It is essential to use anonymized data when incorporating ChatGPT into SoTL research. This can be achieved by removing any identifying information from the text used to train the algorithm. Additionally, researchers must obtain informed consent from participants before extracting data from them. Data should not be able to be accessed without the users permission.

Bias and Transparency

Furthermore, it is important to address potential bias in ChatGPT research. The algorithm can incorporate biases from the data it was trained on, which can result in biased responses to user queries. Researchers can address this issue by using a diverse set of training data or by using bias detection and mitigation tools to identify and remove any stereotypes or prejudices from the dataset.

Transparency is crucial for ChatGPT research, which means that researchers must clearly state the limitations, assumptions, and potential biases of the algorithm. Researchers can use techniques like natural language explanations to help users understand how the responses were generated and provide local interpretability.

Impact on Teaching and Learning

AI has the potential to revolutionize education, both for students and teachers. It transforms how data is accessed, teacher/student interactions, assessment, and allows for more personalization; however, it is not without its risks. It is new. There is a lot to learn and we need to make sure that we are not seeking innovation in the expense of our responsibilities. In addition for minimizing bias,it is important to evaluate the true value of the AI activities on student learning.

In conclusion, the use of ChatGPT in SoTL research can be valuable, but researchers must be mindful of privacy concerns, data protection laws, bias, and transparency. These factors must be addressed to uphold ethical standards and ensure the responsible use of AI in research.
