We sometimes become aware of significant loss or grief a student or colleague is carrying. How do you create an intentional, reflective pause after hearing difficult news to process that information, and ensure you carry that empathy without letting it compromise your ability to notice the meaningful, positive interactions happening in your classes or departments?

I will check in with a student, via a university e-mail/message, provide an empathetic response to their situation, determine if there are any needs that can appropriately be met through my support as their instructor. Additionally, I will ensure they are aware of the support/services offered through the University in which they can tap into as a student. Students generally appreciate that someone has noticed that something may be going on, and a response to let them know you care, from a human standpoint, makes a difference. Students feel seen.

Thank you for sharing, Nakisha. What I see in your response is the intention that you bring to it, and I would agree with you that when that is evident, those who you are communicating, as you put it, will feel seen.
