Integrating Faith Into Your Classroom: How Can This Be Done??
Many people struggle with the boundaries of what can be shared about faith within the classroom. Others struggle with understanding how to implement faith in the classroom when they do come from that type of background. Instructors either never attempt to do this because they feel absolutely uncomfortable doing it or they do it as many times as they can because it is a part of their fiber. Where ever an instructor happens to fall into this scale, there is a great resource that can help you to understand what integrating faith into the classroom is all about. I am providing the resource here and I will be giving more tools from this site and others in the future in order to help instructors feel more comfortable implementing faith into the classrooms at the higher level of education.
The book is entitled "The Integration of Faith and Learning: A Worldview Approach." The book was written in 2004 and it gives a great approach for how to implement faith into any classroom setting.
Robert Harris also has a website called Virtual Salt that provides a detailed listing of many resources that you can pull from to help you with this topic and to help you to find strategies to bring faith into the classroom. Here is the link to the web site: http://www.virtualsalt.com/int/

Matthew, In my professional counseling classes we do have some discussion about integrating Christian faith into the counseling program. One of the issues for discussing an integration of Christian faith into counseling is the reality that there are at least five recognized ways to integrate Christian faith into psychology or counseling. The five approaches are well-documented in this work: Eric Johnson, ed. Psychology and Christianity: Five Views, InterVarsity Press, 2010.
If I were to begin a serious discussion on integrating "a Christian worldview" into my counseling classroom, I would have to start by informing the students that there is no such thing as "The Christian worldview" when integrating Christianity into psychology/couseling. Beyond the five views discussed by the contributors to Johnson's volume there are a number of other Christian approaches which might considered more denominational in approach, for example, the Reformed perspective: http://standardbearer.rfpa.org/articles/development-reformed-psychology-continued and the Anabaptist/Mennonite perspective: Nancey Murphy, (1997), Reconciling theology & Science: A radical Reformation perspective, Pandora Press.
While it is valuable to suggest that we integrate Christianity in the world of academia and, more specifically, in the curriculum at Grand Canyon University, we would do well to remind ourselves that there will often be disparate views of what we mean when we use the term, Christian Worldview.
Hi Ron, I would definitely agree with you as there are always going to be different perpectives on how to use the term Christian Worldview. Thank you for sharing your comments and for sharing the five ways to integrate faith. That is an excellent resource. I hope that this forum provokes thought and discussion and it allows others to feel equipped to integrate faith into the classroom. Thanks again for your response and keep up the great efforts my friend. Matt
Matthew, Is there a way for me to write a blog, as you did, that might be specifically targeted to the instructors of pschology/counseling in order to create a discussion about what a Christian worldview of psychology/counseling might look like?
Hi Ron, I have to check on that for you. I know there is a way but I can get back to you about who to contact about starting that blog. I know there are other psychology instructors that would definitely be interested in this. Take care. Matt.
Matthew, Thank you for doing the research.
Ron
