How are your leadership Skills?
Would you like to know how you are doing as a leader in your field? In the field of business there is a philosophy known as leadership 360 degree feedback. This is a way for people to get feedback from their closest peers, family, and friends to see how they are doing as a leader. I have compiled some questions that you can give to your peers. These are questions that I took from a recent survey that we took on our team. I am going to use this to assess how other people perceive my leadership abilities. This is a leadership web done by Greg Shelley in 2006. Try to have a few of your closest friends take this test and see how they rate you as a leader in your organization. Explain to them that a score of 1 is the lowest score possible and a score of 10 is the highest score possible. Have them give you explanations in each area and possibly suggestions on how you can improve in each of these areas.

Matt, thanks for sharing this leadership survey. Quick questions: Do you have an estimate on how long the survey takes? Also is there any evaluative breakdown in the scores? For example, there appears to be a total of 150 points possible. What score would one need to get to be considered an exceptiona leader, good leader, adequate leader, etc.?
Scott
Hello Matt:
Thank you for the excellent post. I like that your survey was holistic in nature measuring for the more nuanced aspects of leadership. Although it is easy to measure fiscal returns, or other tangible results, many leadership qualities are harder to quantify through hard data. The idea to have survey takers also provide qualitative feedback could allow you to have both qualitative and quantitative indications of your leaderships abilities, which I would imagine is helpful to improve areas of lacking as well as solidifying strengths. Have you considered creating or adapting a survey for use in the classroom, perhaps one that asks students to identity their leadership traits and then requires them to provide evidence for the rating?
Thanks,
Eric
Thank you for your question Eric. I have not thought of adapting this to the classroom but I think it would be a great tool to ask my students and maybe change the questions just a bit. I like that idea because my students will be the most honest with me. Take care. Matt.
Hi Scott, Thank you for your questions in response to this survey. I do not know how long it takes to complete the survey but I would have to guess that it would take about 15 minutes at the maximum. I have each question numbered so that I know what I get as a score for each question. I am basing this on a traditional percentage score for each question. If I get a 7 on the question then that is a 70% in that area. I am not getting a cumulative score but I am looking to see how I am doing in each particular area. Take care and thanks for the question. Matt.
Hello Matt:
I know that many instructors have been using KWL assessment techniques within their classrooms and I think your survey, with some adjustment, could serve as assessment measurement. You could ask students to comment on what they know about leadership, would like to know about leadership, and then have them rate themselves at the end of the course to measure where they made progress, and where there is room for improvement. Just a thought.
Thanks,
Eric
