University of Maryland PhD Candidate Sara Buckingham is seeking research team members/assistants for my community-based dissertation research
She has sent us the following information:
"I am reaching out to you in the hopes that we can speak about my project further and you find that you have students and/or alumni who would be interested in becoming involved in the team.
Allow me to briefly detail the project: My dissertation is a mixed-methods study examining Latina/o immigrants' adaptation and wellbeing. I am examining factors that help or impede Latina/o immigrants from acculturating in their preferred ways, and the impact of that alignment or divergence on their stress and wellbeing. It is entitled, When real diverges from ideal: The role of person-environment fit in Latina/o immigrants’ acculturation and psychosocial wellbeing across four states.
The research is being conducted in four states: Arizona, New Mexico, Maryland, and Virginia. I am seeking research team members who are fluent in Spanish, are interested in immigrants' wellbeing and mixed-methods community action research, and would be able to participate in the project over the 2015-2016 academic year (for one semester or two). In addition to increasing our knowledge in this area and making a difference in these communities, through this project I aim to strengthen team members' research skills and help them gain presentation and publication opportunities, readying them for a career in academia and/or community research and action.
The research assistants can expect:
- To gain experience in community research and recruitment of community members.
- To gain experience distributing surveys.
- To gain experience in focus group facilitation by observing focus groups that I will conduct.
- To gain experience in transcribing qualitative data.
- To gain experience in analyzing quantitative (survey) and qualitative (focus group) data.
- To gain experience sharing results with community members and organizations.
- To be included in presentation and publication opportunities.
- To get a letter of recognition following their completion of their time on the project.
- To receive in-person training and support and weekly supervision throughout their assistantship.
