Hi All!
For those of you who might be new (I had a posted discussion last week), my name is Mike Considine and I will be facilitating the discussion in this thread which is being sponsored by the Faculty Advisory Board (FAB). This discussion is presented as a part of the Faculty Training Culture Initiative.
My responses in my last discussion talked about the impact that thoughts can have on emotions. These thoughts are called “cognitive distortions.” We don’t think about thinking. Rather, thoughts occur automatically. Sometimes, these thoughts can be the springboard to unpleasant emotions. The automatic thoughts also impact our behaviors.
In my experiences as an online adjunct instructor, I tend to see depression, anxiety, and irritability. The emotions can be exacerbated by cognitive distortions (“stinkin thinkin”) which can potentially result in the student taking his or her focus off of the task at hand.
I invite you to read the short article 15 Common Cognitive Distortions by John Grohol. It would be great if you could review it and think about correspondence you have had with past and present students. What did the student say and what cognitive distortions might you apply?
For example, and this is something a student has said to me, let’s say a student says, “yeah, you are definitely targeting me.” This would be an example of “jumping to conclusions.”

HI All
Let’s play a game, In my original post, I included a link about the 15 cognitive distortions. I took the first five and created things students might say based upon those distortions. Pick one or two (or five) and how would you respond?

Filtering.
I didn’t get my week 8 paper in on time and I am so sorry. I know that the I will get a 10% late deduction for what I did and I hope that it won’t impact my grade too much
Polarized Thinking (or “Black and White” Thinking).
I have a 4.0 now and I have to maintain this. I am not happy with my A- and I would like to discuss how I can improve my grade because that last grade is unacceptable
Jumping to Conclusions.
You only gave me 4 of 5 points on my last discussion board and a C- on my last paper. Yep, you definitely have it out for me
Catastrophizing.
Thank you for letting me hand in my work late and for being so understanding, I’m worried, though because what if this makes be fall behind for the rest of the semester? I’m worried that I’ll get an even worse grade than I already have
Personalization.
I was supposed to meet with my group at 6:00pm and I was 15 minutes late. When I came in for the Skype session and I caused the whole group study session to be disrupted. They probably won’t do as well on the test because of me
HI All
Here’s is part two of the game, In my last response post, I included five of 15 student based cognitive distortions (see link in my original post). Here are another five. As above, pick one or two (or five) and how would you respond?

Control Fallacies.
I was trying to get my work in on time but the direction were so unclear that I couldn’t understand them. Also, my boss wouldn’t let me leave work early.
Fallacy of Fairness.
As you know by now, I did not hand in two of my three assignments. I am hoping that you will not deduct late points from me this week. I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks we had too much work for this week. We all work jobs and it’s unfair that I have all of these assignments while trying to get my work done for this class.
Blaming.
I felt really bad about the comments that you left for me on the latest discussion board. It’s been on my mind all day and I don’t why you want to make me feel guilty about the way I write.
Shoulds.
I really should be studying and shouldn’t be so lazy. The C I have really isn’t my usual. I just can’t motivate myself.
Emotional Reasoning.
I read the comments that you gave me on the last paper. I felt really stupid when I read them because I try not to make mistakes. It must be something with me that I’m not smart enough to do good here.
HI All
As we return from the Thanksgiving holiday, I wanted to post the last of the 15 student based cognitive distortions. As above, pick one or two (or five) and how would you respond? What emotions do you see the student experiencing?

fallacy of Change.
I am writing again to see if you would be willing to waive the 10% late penalty from my paper. I have been losing so much sleep over this and I can’t believe you don’t offer a free pass for this one time. My work has been suffering because of this. Please reconsider. I beg you.
Global Labeling.
I feel like a complete failure because of my last grade on my paper. This school is so inflexible and does not care about its students. You are all greedy because you want students to have to take the class again and make us pay more money than we already do.
Always Being Right.
I know that you said that you could not accept an assignment after the end of the semester but I know grades are not due for another couple of days. I will go to your supervisor and I have never been one who was afraid to go against a professor.
Heaven’s Reward Fallacy.
I spend days and days studying and I have taken off work so I can give time to study for a test. I always read the directions and check the rubric before I do the assignments and before I submit it. Yet, I still get a C. I’m not sure why you give me the C when I put so much time in the class
Overgeneralization.
I know I failed the first paper for the class. This semester has not gotten off in the worst way. I know we have a paper due every week and I’m afraid that it’s going to be more of the same.
