Welcome to INK! The INK program is an 8-week series designed to assist faculty in publishing their research. The program will walk faculty through the steps in the process and will guide them in writing a manuscript that can be submitted for publication. |
The INK program is intended to provide structure and support to help you move the the ideas in your head into publications on your vita. Participation in the INK program assumes your research is complete, the data has been analyzed, and that you have drawn conclusions from that data that you would like to share with academic community. If you have just completed research and do not know how to begin the publication process, or if you have recently done a research poster session or given a presentation and would like to take your findings to the next level, you may find the INK program a valuable tool to assist you in reaching your publication goals. INK will help you overcome your fears of the writing process and will help you avoid the pitfalls that keep many faculty from getting their results published.
Following is an outline of the INK series:
- Week 1 - Selecting a Journal
- The first module will assist faculty in selecting a journal for submission of their manuscript. The manuscript guidelines for that journal will dictate much of the writing process so it is an important first step.
- Week 2 - Review the Literature
- In this module, faculty will learn how to review relevant literature and prepare to use that literature to support the case for their research.
- Week 3 - Writing the Manuscript - Part 1
- Faculty will review the basic parts of a research paper and then use the literature review from Week 2 to begin writing their Introduction and strengthening their argument.
- Week 4 - Writing the Manuscript - Part 2
- This module will focus on writing the Methods section of the manuscript and will provide general guidelines for faculty to help them describe their methodology.
- Week 5 - Writing the Manuscript - Part 3
- Faculty will focus on appropriately presenting their evidence and findings when writing the Results section of their manuscript.
- Week 6 - Writing the Manuscript - Part 4
- In this module, faculty will write the Discussion section focusing on interpretation of the results and how to articulate the significance of the research findings.
- Week 7 - Review, Revise, and Refine
- This module will provide faculty with tools to assist them in revising and fine tuning their writing to create a more polished manuscript. Faculty will be asked to seek out a colleague in their field to review the revised draft and provide additional feedback.
- Week 8 - Writing the Cover Letter and Next Steps
- Faculty will write a draft of the cover letter that typically must accompany the manuscript during submission. This module will also discuss the submission process, expected timelines, and journal decisions.
