Ryan Sand is my hero.
Dear Trollinger, Sugata and Guest Speaker Ryan Sand:
Interesting talk on campus safety. I think teaching awareness is key here. It is like stopping, looking, and listening at the traffic light for those 3-5 seconds before you drive through. We teach children to stop, drop and roll when they are dealing with fire flames. This can save their lives. In a similar manner, acting out and/or role-playing some of these campus safety threats may help. Teaching a person to stay calm in a stressful situation and not panic can be a real key here. Thanks. Blessings and Lopes up!

Gentleman,
Thank you very much for sharing your insights regarding campus safety. Although I am an online adjunct professor, I am a 5th grade teacher as well.
I connected well with the themes of "changing educational environments" and preparedness. Just ten short years ago, our district schools' doors were unlocked during the school day. Now, we've added key-coded locks, a secondary set of doors, camera system throughout the school, and the recent addition of a designated police officer.
Sadly, we've learned how to better prepare our teachers, staff, and students, as a result of school violence. In all cases, despite the prevalence of locked doors, cameras, etc. it was the swift, decisive actions of teachers, staff, and law enforcement that prevented greater loss of life and injury.
All the Best,
Matt
Rachel and Matthew,
Thank you for taking the time to comment. We love the idea of revisiting this topic of safety and awareness. I hope folks will even come back to previous episodes as they can serve as applicable refreshers or reminders.
