I thought this was fantastic.. thanks for providing such great information in your presentation! KWL is a great tool to use in the online format. I really liked what you wrote about responding with the KWL method early. Do you find that the placement of the CAT makes a difference in the response you get?
Great question. John and I have been working with KWL's for sometime and agree that the placement of the KWL's is extremely important. I try to make sure they are the very first reply to the DQ each week so that students see them right away. I also encourage them to reply to the "K" before they do anything else so that I can get a true understanding of the knowledge they are bringing into the week.
Yes, I personally have seen an increase in participation each and every week since incorporating the KWL's. I have recently revised my KWL's after running the same questions through several courses. I was able to see some areas of need that the KWL's did not hit on and so the revision was necessary. This is what I love about these formative assessments. We have the ability to make changes in teachable moments when we see the need, something we cannot do with the summative assessment of classes. But, yes, in my raw data their was at least a 20% increase each week in participation. John Steele and I are currently discussing completing more extensive research to measure this very thing regarding participation and KWL's for the Call for Papers in JIR. We look forward to sharing that information with you all.

Do you see a consistent rate of student responses to the KWL's throughout the term? Do students see the value of these additional interactions?
