Citing social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc) in APA style
As more and more of our "news" is broadcast via social media websites, it becomes important to be able to document and reference these types of communication. While the APA Style Publication Manual doesn't explicitly highlight references or citations for social media, Chelsea Lee (www.apastyle.org) provides the following guidelines:
Because posts from online social media, such as Twitter and Facebook, are not yet often fodder for scholarly research, specific reference examples aren't included in the Publication Manual. Well, whenever you need a reference format for something that's not explicitly covered in the manual, you can adapt our examples to meet your needs (see p. 193). Tweets are becoming a major player in the distribution of information. As such, you may find yourself wondering, "how do I cite a tweet in an academic paper?" Fortunately, MLA has provided some guidance to address this issue.
Begin the entry in the works-cited list with the author's real name and, in parentheses, user name, if both are known and they differ. If only the user name is known, give it alone.
Next provide the entire text of the tweet in quotation marks, without changing the capitalization. Conclude the entry with the date and time of the message and the medium of publication (Tweet). For example:
