Classroom Spotlight
How long after a lecture or hearing someone speak do you remember what they have taught you? In a month's time you will probably have forgotten most of what they had taught you!! In this short article, you will learn how to challenge students to apply what they are learning so that their lives will be transformed by what they are learning!!
Application Equals Transformation
I have always thought that if you are not able to apply the information that you are learning then it is not very useful or even worthless. How many of us can remember a lecture that we heard one week ago or a month ago. If we challenge students to apply what they are learning then their lives will be transformed because they will remember what they are learning forever.
I have always believed that application equals…
Facilitating courses online at GCU has been a rewarding experience for me. I enjoy bringing my teaching experience into a venue that is enlightening for others.
The most effective teaching strategy I use in my online classes is communication. I believe my students deserve respect and consideration, and I contact each one often and answer questions promptly. I get to know my students on a more personal level when I can communicate with them several times a day. Keeping in touch also aids me in giving positive feedback and guiding students to the many resources available.

Being able to assess adult learners’ multifaceted needs is a skill that instructors must learn to apply in the world of virtual learning and on ground campus settings. Learning involves several sensory domains, such as thinking, feeling, hearing, and touching.
Adult learners come equipped with many learning styles and needs as they move through respective academic programs. Many adults are entering the world of academic in their middle 30's and even 40's. After a ten or twenty year's hiatus from the University setting, it is not always simple to adjust or adapt to a new learning platform or setting. Reflexive Listening and Outreach in the Virtual Classroom - Stephanie Sencil-White
A student’s academic world is central to living in the virtual world because of how they interact, exchange ideas, and work with their instructors. This ability is an impressive mechanism for not just attracting students to enroll in respective college programs, but, serves as an additional incentive in that students are able to attend class from anywhere in the world, can submit assignments at any time, and interact with faculty directly through a virtual classroom and environment.
With education being the key ingredient to a obtaining a better lifestyle, many people are taking advantage of the opportunity for advancement professionally and academically by going back to college. Going back to college is much more advanced than a decade ago in that students now have the opportunity to attend college online. A student's academic world is central to living in the virtual world because of how they interact with peers, exchange ideas, and work day to day with their…
Michelle Slabiak – Faculty Availability based on Own Personal Experiences
During my time here at GCU, I always try to remember my experience as a student in an online learning environment and be sure that I am meeting the expectations that I had as a student. I completed my MBA online when the Online Learning Environment was relatively new and things were not near as advanced as they are today.
I have witnessed how advanced online learning has become and how much more students are offered today as resources. I think it is a fantastic way for working adults to be able to further their education and reach their goals and dreams. Online Learning hits very close to home especially now as my husband has returned back to school to complete his degree online. He is able to do his school work at night after our children go to bed and still be at home in a relaxing environment. …
Most students desire and expect to be challenged and mentored as they proceed through their academic programs of study. Setting high standards for student performance translates into a stimulating learning environment in which students demonstrate their ability to comprehend subject matter, think critically, integrate supportive source material, and apply concepts in practical ways.
In my experience as college level educator for the past 11 years, I have found most students desire and expect to be challenged and mentored as they proceed through their academic programs of study. Setting high standards for student performance (assignments, CLC team involvement, and DQ participation) translates into a stimulating learning environment in which students demonstrate their ability to comprehend subject matter, think critically, integrate supportive source material, and apply…
Karen Benjamin - Facilitating Success with English as a Second Language Adult Learners
I find myself increasingly confused as to how to evaluate essays within the context of respecting cultural diversity while at the same time maintaining equity acorss all student grades. Yet I do believe it is an educator’s duty and responsibility to maintain the integrity of a college degree that speaks to an ability to effectively communicate in our primary language of English.
That the student population continues to become more culturally diverse is not new news to college educators. According to 2005 data published by the American Council on Education (ACE), 42% of undergraduates aged 25 and older are students of color and/or foreign born with 31 % in degree completion programs such as in fields of law and healthcare (ACE,2005). There is no denying universities across the county in every state are seeing greater numbers of adult learners for whom English is a…
Successful online classrooms are dependent upon effective communication and the interaction of ideas. Ideas take the usual form of descriptive vocabulary but sensory connectors can enhance the understanding of complex concepts.
Sensory connectors have always been a vehicle that I have used in my teaching, writing, and communication. As a pastor and teacher for over 40 years, I have always used physical items like a small safe, traffic light, or bicycle during the talk as a connecting point to illustrate a truth. The visual becomes a point of marrying truths with a visual concept leading to practical extended memory. Most simple memory systems link concepts with other connectors to enhance memory.
The style of the GCU…
Susan Montjar: Teachers Touch Tomorrow- Motivating Students in an Online Environment
Online instructors are empowered with many opportunities to help students enhance their knowledge and enrich their lives through education—the ultimate key to advancing our civilization. As educators, our ongoing challenge is to find techniques to motivate all students to consistently perform at their highest academic level―a challenge that is greatly intensified in our faceless, inanimate cyber world.
Unfortunately, online educators and students alike often face frustrating challenges in virtual classrooms, including connectivity Internet access, navigational issues, time management concerns, time-zone variables, and other ongoing problems that continually impair the learning process. However, the inherent conundrum with online learning is that the majority of communication in our classrooms is one-way and limited solely to the written word.
Unlike a traditional classroom setting where…
Teaching goes beyond ensuring that students learn the required content of a course... effective teaching engages, motivates and inspires!
When asked to comment on the aspects that demonstrate innovation and best practice in my classroom, I turned to my students and requested their help. I do not see what I do as special because I am an educator. I give my very best to every student who enters my classroom. I believe education is the one thing that no one can ever take away from an individual. Being a nurse educator is not my job, it is who I am, the essence of my being. I have always been passionate about teaching.…
