I find myself increasingly confused as to how to evaluate essays within the context of respecting cultural diversity while at the same time maintaining equity acorss all student grades. Yet I do believe it is an educator’s duty and responsibility to maintain the integrity of a college degree that speaks to an ability to effectively communicate in our primary language of English.
That the student population continues to become more culturally diverse is not new news to college educators. According to 2005 data published by the American Council on Education (ACE), 42% of undergraduates aged 25 and older are students of color and/or foreign born with 31 % in degree completion programs such as in fields of law and healthcare (ACE,2005). Successful online classrooms are dependent upon effective communication and the interaction of ideas. Ideas take the usual form of descriptive vocabulary but sensory connectors can enhance the understanding of complex concepts.
Sensory connectors have always been a vehicle that I have used in my teaching, writing, and communication. As a pastor and teacher for over 40 years, I have always used physical items like a small safe, traffic light, or bicycle during the talk as a connecting point to illustrate a truth. The visual becomes a point of marrying truths with a visual concept leading to practical extended memory. Most simple memory systems link concepts with other connectors to enhance memory.
