Joshua Greever attended Southeast Regional Meeting of the Evangelical Theological Society in Kentucky, March 17-18, 2017. The theme of the conference was: "Work, Vocation, and Human Flourishing in the Christian Tradition". The title of his presentation was "The Gospel and True Human Flourishing in Ephesians". The presentation analyzed the relationship between the gospel, work, and human flourishing in Paul's letter to the Ephesians. The gospel in Ephesians provides hope for what we might call "true human flourishing," for it is focused on God's work to save sinners by grace alone through the death and resurrection of Christ, and to bring them into the new humanity. Christians already share in this everlasting, divinely-caused flourishing, yet we anticipate the future consummation of God's flourishing work of redemption for us. In the meantime, as a necessary result of our present experience of the gospel, Christians are called to testify to this true human flourishing by engaging in meaningful work that contributes to human flourishing in the present age.
