Do online homework managementsystems work? Or are they a vehicle for grade inflation? Previous studieson this question are far from unanimous in their support of homework managementsystems. Dr. Kathy Archer, Assistant Professor of Economics with the ColangeloCollege of Business, presented research findings at the SoTL Commons Conferencein Savannah, GA. suggesting the use of online homework management systemsincreases student learning. Archer, along with Dr. Mark Olson, ColangeloCollege of Business, studied a sample of more than 2500 online students in ECN220 and found the use of online homework management systems significantlyincreased homework scores and significantly increased exam scores. Furthermore, they found that under the homework management system, variance inhomework scores explained 74% of variance in exam scores. The size of thesample for this study, along with the focus on adult online learners brings newinsights to the debate and suggests new pathways for future studies.
