As far as EOCSs, students typically like when instructors respond to messages and voicemails quickly. Most students can access LoudCloud from their phones and tablets, check forum posts and reply to forum posts right from these convenient devices. I think that the results of using the individual forum as a more effective way for students to gain knowledge and for student engagement are not surprising. It would be nice if instant messaging coulsd become active in LoudCloud.
Thank you for your comments, Kristen. I think instant messaging would help overcome the distance barrier that many students often express. It would help build a sense of community and belonging since responses would be immediate.
Nice work here Tania, Nikki, and Ruben. Being readily available to students and answering questions in a timely manner is important. However, do you believe there is value in our wait time. In the traditional classroom teachers who have good "wait time" are praised. Wait time provides students the opportunity to find the answer and the time to share. Many times instructors step in too quickly. Do you think this could be a limitation? I also believe that instant messaging could be a benefit if used efficiently. Thanks for sharing.
It is interesting that you bring this up, Tom. Effective communication practices are essential in any education setting. However, students' preferred teacher communication practices are inherently different in traditional and online learning environments. Traditional students in a face to face setting truly value wait time as you mentioned. However, online learners have different teacher expectations when it comes to providing timely feedback. Any thoughts?
