Research Funding Guidelines

Is your application eligible for funding?

All GCU fulltime faculty (including both campus-based and online) and online doctoral faculty and learners are eligible to apply for Research Funds. All funded SoTL research must be completed as an affiliate of GCU. Review the following guidelines to confirm your eligibility to receive funding.

Policies

Research Fundings are available to promote scholarly activities of GCU full time faculty  and doctoral faculty and learners. Research Funding provides funding for SoTL research supplies and expenses.

Items eligible for funding vary based on applicant's status:

Faculty are eligible to apply for funding for:

-Travel expenses associated with data collection and collaboration (i.e., field research, travel to collections, collaboration with coauthors at other institutions, etc); international travel  or expenses are not supported via this grant program.

- Acquisition of research materials (i.e., software/hardware, electronic databases, supplies, etc.).

- Development of a significantly new approach in teaching that focuses on improving student learning.

- Editorial assistance that results in the publication of one's research in a peer-reviewed journal.

Activities not eligible for Research Funds include

- Self-payment including faculty salary or additional compensation for research activities.

- Awards, prizes or incentives to increase participation in research activities.

- Revision and updating of courses that are considered to be an expected aspect of the faculty-teaching role at GCU.

- Extra childcare expenses incurred because of scholarly activities or travel.

- Standard office expenses, software/hardware and office supplies.

- Clerical or secretarial assistance.

Doctoral Learners are eligible to apply for funding for:

- Acquisition of research materials (i.e., software/hardware, electronic databases, supplies, surveys, etc.) that lie outside the scope of a typical dissertation project.

Activities that are a regular component of the dissertation process are not eligible for Doctoral Learner Research Grants. Exclusions include:

- Self-payment including salary or additional compensation for research activities.

- Awards, prizes or incentives to increase participation in research activities.

- Travel for data collection, research activities or participation at residency.

- Extra childcare expenses incurred because of scholarly activities or travel.

- Standard office expenses, software/hardware and office supplies.

- Clerical or secretarial assistance.

- Editorial or statistical consultants.

Any materials, equipment or supplies funded by the grant program that are not consumed or depleted as a function of the research activity will become the property of the university and/or college at the completion of the research project.

Funding Amounts

Research Funds are awarded on a competitive basis up to the following limit:

  • $2500 per research project

Applicants must include a notice of any funding received from another source; duplicate funding (i.e., funding for the same purpose) is not allowed.  Grant awards will balance the demands of multiple meritorious proposals against limited funds. In case of equal merit, preference will be given to full-time faculty and those that have not received a recent Research Grant.

Eligibility

All fulltime faculty (including both campus-based and online) and doctoral affiliates (faculty, learners and alumni) are eligible to apply for Research Funds. Faculty, students and alumni must complete all funded research as an affiliate of GCU. Proposals may be submitted jointly by more than one individual.

Application Timeline

Applicants will be notified of the status of their proposal approximately four weeks after submission. Monies must be expended within one year unless an extension is requested and approved by CIRT. Significant changes in project objectives, procedures, or budget cannot be undertaken without the approval of CIRT. Research Funds will terminate when the recipients' appointment at GCU comes to an end.
