Quantitative Methods
Choosing the most appropriate sample size from a population for a quantitative research study.
In inferential statistics, we often want to generalize about a population from a relatively small sample group. Sample size calculators can help us do this.
The most essential concept of my blog today is to encourage you to think about two things: 1) how many participants are needed for my study, and 2) how do I select them from the larger group? I am often asked how many participants are needed in a study for it to be "statistically reliable." The answer is: it depends, but in general terms, surprisingly few! The "magic" number is usually 30. And, for sure, 300 is not 10x as "accurate" as 30. For example, if I were to randomly select 30 people…
The "Greatest Hits" of Statistical Terms - An Introduction to Statistics PPT
This PowerPoint offers some information about some terms and methods that you may encounter in quantitative research.
Doctoral Learners:
After having taught undergraduate and graduate Statistics courses for the past ten years, and after having interacted with many of you in the last four in-person Phoenix Doctoral Residencies, I offer the attached narrated PowerPoint as an intro to many of the most basic terms and methods that might be helpful to you in your quantitative research. If you happen NOT to understand ALL of the concepts, or even ANY of them, that's OK! Actually, that's expected! In my upcoming…
Quantitative versus Qualitative Dissertations - Which is Right for me?
Making the right choice between a quantitative and qualitative dissertation.
During my four Residencies in-person in Phoenix, I have guided many learners' research methods. I am often asked if a qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods dissertation is the "best." The answer is: it depends. Of course, as a faculty member with expertise in quantitative research, I am biased toward a quantitative study whenever possible, as being able to prove something with numbers is a skill that is very much needed today in industry. Usually, learners will focus on correlative…
Purchase SPSS Base Statistics Package for a very minimal student price!
Doctoral Learners:
As a follow-up to my previous blog about SPSS, I offer the following information about purchasing SPSS at a minimal student price. Of course, you do NOT have to purchase SPSS if you are doing a qualitative study, or even if you are doing a quantitative study. However, if you are doing a quantitative study, it is the gold standard of statistical software packages. This being said, you might also want to consider the timing of your purchase, as the license is for one year,…
