Hi all,
I apologize if this has been addressed here already, but I tried searching the forums and didn't see an answer for this. Are students allowed to submit a paper that they've already written for another class? I have a student who came back at a 94% similarity on LopesWrite, because she essentially reused an assignment that was submitted for another GCU class. I wasn't sure if this was allowed or not, since it is the students original work.
Thanks!

Hi Haley, High similarity reports may occur due to student repeating course. A student who retakes a course may resubmit their individual assignment for credit, so long as it is exactly the same course and assignment. For example, a student who has taken UNV103 and is retaking UNV-103 may resubmit an individual assignment without penalty, even if the citation and grammar tool score is high. Please note that the student cannot reuse CLC work. Students will not be able to reuse the UNV-103 assignment for another course, like CWV-101. If the student is resubmitting DQs, CLCs, or work from a completely different course, please provide guidance to the student about this restriction as submitted work for a completely different course is self-plagiarism. Faculty should contact Faculty Training and Development to verify the student is retaking the course. Please note faculty should grade these submissions accordingly, as allowing students to resubmit work from prior attempts at the same course does not imply a certain score will be earned. Please note in the gradebook the similarity score is elevated due to retaking the course.
This information was copied from the GCU Online Faculty Teaching Manual. It has a lot of really good information in it. You can check it out at... https://cirt.gcu.edu/frc/faculty_circles/mentors/documents/facilitating_the_mentorship/mentoship_posts_attachments/grand_canyon_university_online_faculty_teaching_manual_december_2020docx#
I understand that they can only use an assignment if they received an incomplete/failed and taking the exact course over. Other than that, they have to submit a NEW assignment.
I usually direct them to their LW in the feedback and explain why they have to do it over. If they say they are retaking the class, I ask for a TRANSCRIPT to make sure that they are retaking the class. I want to be sure.

Hi Haley,
It is my understanding that students are allowed to reuse a paper, if they are repeating a course. They can resuse a paper for the same class. Even when resubmitting, they are supposed to write new DQ responses and cannot reuse collaborative papers.
It is my understanding that a student cannot submit a paper written for a different class. All writing for the new course should be "fresh" and new.
GCU considers the practice of reusing a entire paper, or a portion of a paper from a past class in a new (different) class is called self-plagiarism.
I would reach out to Faculty Services, if you have any questions about the student's repeat status.
Take care,
Phillip
