Hello Everyone,
My name is Dr. Ginger Warren and I am teaching NUR 699 as my first online course at GCU. My students are in the third week of a five-week course and I wanted to know if they need to obtain Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval for their projects. A majority of my students are going to distribute surveys or personally interview their colleagues regarding the data they are trying to collect for their EBP project. I remember from my Doctor of Nursing Practice program dissertation I had to obtain IRB approval as an exempt status because I was not working directly with patients. I realize that I am teaching master's in nursing students, but I wanted to be sure that they do not need IRB approval for their projects. Thank you in advance for your advice!

Hi Ginger, I have taught NUR699 For several years and it is my understanding that and IRB is not needed or required because students did not actually implement their proposal in this course. Students go through the process of what is required to construct a proposal that could actually be implemented at the worksite however it is not a requirement that their proposal is actually implemented. To this end, no IRB is required or necesssary Because implementation is beyond the scope of this course. Doctor Joyce
Good Morning Doctor Joyce,
I appreciate your response very much! I have mentioned Cititraining to the students for them to look through just in case they are considering a DNP or a PhD, although I do not require it. Have a great day!
