Level Up! An Introduction to Digital Badges
Digital badges create a game-like experience allowing learners to display the skills they have obtained from courses. Instructors can identify new competency areas and recognize mastery or demonstration of those competencies. Badges also signal engagement, are motivating, promote community, encourage critical thinking and reward participation in formative assessment activities. In this workshop, Thomas Dyer, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, explains what a digital badging program is, the benefits of digital badges, how to create your own badging program, and provides insight into student perceptions of a digital badging program. This is one workshop you won’t want to miss! Register for a session today!
Looking forward to your contributions!

This was a very informative and fun workshop! I made my first badge today!! It was very easy to create! I am excited and looking forward to adding digital badges to my classroom!
LaVonne Riggs-Zeigen I'm so glad you joined us! I would love to see your first badge.
A badge for Tom!
Tiffany Newell Thank you!
Hi Everyone,
Here are some of my favorite Digital Badges
In today's presentation, someone asked about badges for ground students. There are a few ways to accomplish this. Because ground students still use LoudCloud, you can give badges in the same way, through the discussion forum. You could also create a PowerPoint slide and share them with students weekly in class. Someone else mentioned an idea of creating a class Passport to give badges. I thought this was a great idea! For some of my ground classes and presentations I have turned my badges into stickers. I get all my stickers from Sticker Mule https://www.stickermule.com/
You can turn any image into a sticker. They are very reasonably priced as well.
Hey everyone, Here is the post I share in week 1 under DQ 1 or 2 and as an announcement to explain the Digital Badging Program to my students. You are more than welcome to use this and adapt as you see fit.
Digital Badging Program! Please Read
Hey Class,
Digital badges recognize a particular experience or signify accomplishments, such as completion of a project or mastery of a skill. In a professional context, a learner typically earns a badge by conducting presentations, attending institutes to develop a specific competency, or serving on advisory boards or committees.
Digital badges enable professional and learning communities to identify new competency areas and recognize mastery or demonstration of those competencies. Badges signal to colleagues and to current and prospective employers a professional life of active learning, engagement, and ongoing development. Those meeting the established criteria have an opportunity to earn and display digital badges in recognition of their engagement in class. Each week I will be presenting badges to those who earn them within the discussion forum. Once you earn a badge not only will your peers share your success but you can display and share your badges on social media or with your friends and family!
Digital Badges
How to earn a badge?
Each week you are required to post 8 substantive participation posts over 4 separate days. Those who go over and beyond this expectation can have the opportunity to earn the “Top Poster” badge. I will reward the Top Substantive Posters each week in the following week.
For example In Week 2 I will have a post rewarding the top posters for Week 1.
To earn this badge I will be looking for the most thought provoking DQ 1 or 2 response. I will be looking for high level responses that create great conversation, address all parts of the question, creativity, relate to personal experiences, and incorporates outside research.
In weeks 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 I will be giving you an opportunity to participate in a practice quiz through the Website Quizizz. These practice quizzes are like a game and you receive points for right answers and more points for faster responses. I will reward a badge to all students who score a 100 on the practice quiz. You can take the practice quiz multiple times, until you score a 100.
At times I will be providing a Flipgrid opportunity. Flipgrid is the leading video discussion platform used by millions of teachers and students. This badge will be rewarded to the student who engages the most in our Flipgrid for the week. Something we like to call #FlipgridFever
In week 3 students are required to construct a thesis statement for DQ1. This badge will be rewarded to students once they are able to create a strong thesis.
Great Ideas!
Hi Claudia,
Thanks for the kudos. Were you able to attend one of the webinars? If not, we will be posting one of the webinars shortly. Within the webinar, I discuss how to create your own digital badging program. I use a website called Credly to create my badges. Be on the lookout for the video this coming week. Have a great day!
The workshop was a great way to share ideas on how to keep our students motivated and engaged. I am working on my first badge and hopefully will be ready to roll out the entire program at the start of my next course!
Thanks for the great ideas!
Hi Soundra,
Thank you for attending the webinar. Yay! I am so excited to see your first badge. When does your next course start? I can't wait to hear all about your digital badging program. Have a great day!
Thomas Dyer
Thomas, I have a course that started a week ago and I was not quite ready to roll it out with fidelity, however this gives me the opportunity to begin with my next course in 5 weeks.
I will let you know the outcome! Wish me luck!
Hi Soundra,
That's understandable. Maybe you can introduce a badge or two to this class as "practice". Perhaps you may see something that catches your eye as impressive. You can give out a badge and just give a short disclaimer on what a badge is and why you did it. You can see how the students respond. Could be a way to test the waters... I'm happy to work on some ideas with you.
Hi Thomas!
I wanted to let you know that I just finished the course that I introduced my first badge and it was wonderful! Students appreciated the recognition and it set a different tone for the class culture (my work is noticed type of feel). The engagement increased and we had wonderful discussions. Students thanked me for the learning experience, which I typically get 1 or 2 comments, however this time about 5 students shared how much they learned! I have rolled out all badges with my new course! Thanks for sharing such a great classroom practice!
Top posters for the week.
Helpful classroom tips and ideas.
Soundra! This is an exciting update! Thank you for sharing. Your badges look so fun and students seem to be really catching on. Great work! Tom
Thank you for sharing this Thomas. I happened to be looking for just this type of thing to incorporate into my GCU, high school classes, and workshops as I work through my summer planning.
Hi Michelle! Welcome to the conversation. I am so happy to see this post! I look forward to seeing what you come up with! If you'd like, please keep me posted. My email is [email protected]

Hey Michelle! I think you could have some great learning experiences integrating Flipgrid into your classes, especially teaching Film and TV production. I think flipgrid could be your new best friend! I would surely check out Flipgrid and then you can integrate badges. Loom is also a great tool for creating videos. Some colleagues of mine wrote a great article on all of these tools, that I think would be helpful as well.

I know I'm late to the discussion. I just found this presentation. I loved it and I'm excited to begin using digital badges in my next course, which begins in one week. I also appreciate you sharing your explanations for each badge that you post at the beginning of the course.
Jenny
Hi Jenny! I am so happy to hear you will be starting your own digital badging program. I would love to hear how it goes. If you have twitter, we can connect there @tommyddyer or you can email me if you have any questions or just want to share your success [email protected]..
Hi Everyone! I haven't fully implemented a weekly digital badge system...yet. But I did create these badges for a class where I am giving feedback for citations. I created three badges since they could get an in-text citation correct but not the reference, and I created a master badge if all parts were correct.
LaVonne! I love these badges. The design is amazing, love the colors and the icons you used. I am totally going to "borrow" these if I have your permission. These are perfect! Thank you for sharing.
Thomas Dyer, you are more than welcome to borrow them!!
Thank you all so much for participating in Level Up: Gamifying Your Classroom.
Here are some of my new badges. You can find my older badges above. I am still working on these and adding new ones and will add them here as I am done.
I love using the badges in my classes but when we transitioned to Halo, I discovered that I was unable to insert images. Anyone else able to use their badges in Halo Learn?
Hi Jenny! Great to communicate with you again. You are correct, we unfortunately, cannot embed media in Halo at this point 😢. However, I use Wakelet to share my badges. I also now use Canva to create my badges.
Here is an example

I love Gamification in general, and I am so grateful for this session - I got some great starting points for incorporating this into my classrooms as a TO instructor.
I can't wait to create my badges! Thank you so much for introducing us to these resources!
Hi Krystina! Ahh Yes! I am so glad you participated with us today. If there is anything I can help with, please let me know. I shared some badges above that you can use as well. My email is [email protected] if you need anything.
