Hello! My name is Ti’Onya Green and I will be facilitating the discussion in this thread, which is being sponsored by the Faculty Advisory Board (FAB). This discussion topic: Strategies for Staying Relevant, is befitting as we are in an ever-evolving global society. Some processes, applications, technology, resources, etc. that we need to share with our students are not theories we learned in college. In addition, some faculty are now teaching and not necessarily in their field, are getting hands-on learning experience. How do we stay relevant? How do we share our experiences and make them relevant to what our students will be using when they leave GCU? What are some strategies for staying relevant?

Frank, I'm so happy to hear that you are incorporating the WSJ into your classes! Since that is a new partnership, I'd love to know how you are using it. I bet our faculty have access to other professional resources and can use similar strategies.

Ti'Onya - this is a great topic. I teach for the Online RN-BSN program, and have students from all across the US. I think one thing that I focus on, is keeping my responses to the student discussion question replies relevant to what the current research is on the various topics. I try very hard to find articles that not only relate to the DQ's, but also spark discussions on what might be happening in the students' part of the country or specific facility.

Staying Relevant to Students Needs During Challenging Times
The current pandemic and economic crisis continues to have a profound impact on how students perform in the classroom. Assessing the climate of the virtual learning environment, requires more than just being present and active. What are some helpful strategies to remain relevant in addressing the needs of students? How do you manage to stay connected, engaged, and resourceful to students facing life challenges in the midst of course(s) and program expectations and guidelines?
Week 3: Staying Relevant in a Social Media Dominated Culture
In what ways does culture shape/cultivate the learning interactions among students in an era of social media dominance? What should educators do to remain relevant, relatable, and responsive to students?

Week 4: Bridging the Technology Gap
By the time students graduate from GCU, some of the technology and resources used for career readiness will be outdated or obsolete. How do we incorporate new technology, in an effort to prepare students, while remaining proactive in a technologically driven global society?
Colleagues, Staying relevant to me reminds me that if what we teach does not connect to a student's life, it isn't .. well it just ain't all that. Brain science reminds us to get those neurons firing we need relevance (all you scientists and nurses feel free to correct my lack of scientific terms). I bring in current scholarly literature to discussion boards - particularly those written during the pandemic if possible. This relates to us all. Current in education is the last three to five years - so every year this is different. Giving students the tools to find current scholarly literature enables them to be always relevant in their futures. In my ABC replies, I tend to ask Big Questions that hopefully require critical thinking. I incorporate plenty of technology platforms that our students (I teach teachers) can use with their students. I always smile when the children of our students hear (for example) the Kahoot music and run in to help their parents do the game. My hope for every graduate of GCU is that they will communicate well (MEAL paragraphs both written and spoken) and will back up what they say with the current scholarly literature. I say on social media, that it is impossible to argue with a librarian because they cite sources. I want that for GCU students.
Over the last two years, staying relevant has had a completely different meaning with all teaching and learning going online. Learning new technologies that will help in effective communication of ideas has been of utmost importance. This was a challenge for both teachers and students. Using all the tools that Zoom, Teams, etc., provide to best substitute in-person learning, is an apt example of staying relevant. I tried to make use of seminars offered by various organizations to explore and deliver using the best that technology has to offer. I teach Math and as you know, Math is best learnt in in-person classes. Hence, it becomes all the more important to utilize various software like Maple that can make it easy to write Math.
