Technology Teaching Tools

Technology Teaching Tools are short, online, asynchronous modules highlighting a technology teaching tool along with relevant pedagogical implementation strategies. Some of the CIRT Technology Tools discussed below rely on freeware downloads. Prior to utilizing these technologies, you are encouraged to understand the potential risks associated with freeware; see the article "Why Free Software Downloads Aren't Always Safe" for an overview of key considerations.

Wondershare

  • Wondershare is a software company that uses two ways to present its products. First, if offers four packages: “Filmora,” ”Dr. Fone,” “PDF Element,” and “Video Converter Ultimate.” Second,  it offers 51 single applications arranged under the following headings: “Video & DVD Tools,” “Digital Photo Software,” “Data Recovery,” PDF Tools,” “Presentation Tools,” Software for Phones,” “System Maintenance,” “System Optimization,” and “Training Tools.” Most projects can be tried for free or bought. A few, mostly under “System Maintenance” can only be bought.

Pedagogical Ideas

In the classroom, Wondershare can be used in a variety of ways. Some ideas include the following:

  • QuizCreator - “QuizCreator” is described as able to “Create Professional Online Quizzes & Surveys,” seems like an easy fit with our online classes in the way Polldaddy, for example” inserts links to quizzes and polls for our students that supplement Discussion Questions and assignments.
  • Resource – Students can use Wondershare as a resource center to address technical issues. For example, they can use the PDF to Word Converter (only available for sale, no free trial), or the PDF to PowerPoint Converter to meet technology assignment requirements of a class. Other data recovery software and system maintenance/optimizing software is available as well.
  • Video Converter – As a package or in separate applications, tools are available to convert, download, edit, burn, and stream videos. Instructors can create videos to supplement assignments. Student can create videos to supplement assignments. This available as a free trial or for purchase in one area, and as a purely free download in another version. More film editing tools are available in the “Filmora” package of tools.
  • Audio Recording – Instructors can use “Streaming Audio Recorder” to supplement written instructions in the class for students who learn better by listening. Any digital audio source (such as part of a podcast or TED talk or YouTube program or music station) can be recorded. The recording can be added as part of discussions. Students can use the software to add sound to PowerPoint presentations.
  • PowerPoint to video – Instructors can use this tool to convert PowerPoint presentations to videos in the way the software “Screencast” is sometimes used to record a PowerPoint as we click through it. Instead the software shows the PowerPoint on a customizable loop.
