Technology Teaching Tools

Technology Teaching Tools are short, online, asynchronous modules highlighting a technology teaching tool along with relevant pedagogical implementation strategies. Some of the CIRT Technology Tools discussed below rely on freeware downloads. Prior to utilizing these technologies, you are encouraged to understand the potential risks associated with freeware; see the article "Why Free Software Downloads Aren't Always Safe" for an overview of key considerations.

  • Voki is an educational tool that allows users to create their very own talking character. Voki is created by Oddcast and is located in New York City. Voki characters can be customized to look like historical figures, cartoons, animals, and even yourself!

Pedagogical Ideas

In the classroom, this technology may be used for the following:

  • Voki allows for the users to create and customize the appearance of the characters they may want to use in their lesson.
  • The application allows for users to create lessons or presentations with their characters but recording their own voice. For example, if I was doing a historical lesson about Abraham Lincoln I could record my voice with a character of him talking.
  • Voki is significantly useful by including a function to seamlessly use text to speech. This could be a great way to create video lectures and transcribe them or vice versa.
  • Voki can be created and inserted into a PowerPoint presentation by simply embedding the given html code.
  • Voki can be used to create educational podcasts using particular characters.
  • Voki be used as a medium for online instructors who may feel comfortable or like displaying a video lecture of themselves to interact with their class and or communicate content.
  • Voki allows for users to record using their own phone by calling the number provided by Voki.
