Technology Teaching Tools

Technology Teaching Tools are short, online, asynchronous modules highlighting a technology teaching tool along with relevant pedagogical implementation strategies. Some of the CIRT Technology Tools discussed below rely on freeware downloads. Prior to utilizing these technologies, you are encouraged to understand the potential risks associated with freeware; see the article "Why Free Software Downloads Aren't Always Safe" for an overview of key considerations.

SlideDog

  • SlideDog is a presentation tool that allows users to integrate multiple file types into one seamless presentation. For example, the user could create a presentation that includes a PowerPoint slideshow, a YouTube video, and a live website. There are also interactive features within SlideDog that can be included in the presentation, such as a live poll, live chat, and feedback. The presentation can be presented in person using a smart phone as a remote, or it can be broadcast live by providing the audience with a link to the presentation.

Pedagogical Ideas

Some of the ways that SlideDog can be used in the classroom include:

  • Student Presentations: Students can use SlideDog for presenting information to the class. This will allow them to enhance presentations with additional elements that will engage the rest of the class.
  • Enhancing Instructor Lectures: Using SlideDog can enhance instructor lectures by providing the opportunity to include multiple file formats in one seamless presentation. The presentation can also be shared with students so they can access the slides from their own devices, allowing them to go back to previous slides, take notes, etc. Inclusion of a live poll or live chat and/or allowing the audience to follow along with slides on their own devices will increase classroom engagement during the student presentation.
  • Platform for sharing information with online students. In the online classroom, instructors can set up a synchronous presentation with students by sharing the presentation through the live option. This will allow instructors to share additional information with students (i.e. assignment help, online lecture, etc.) while interacting with students through the live features available in SlideDog.
  • Create a Lesson Plan. Students could create a SlideDog presentation showing a lesson plan they have created. SlideDog would allow students to upload the Word document of the lesson plan, and then switch to the website showing the standards for the lesson plan, switch to another site that is used within the lesson as an activity, switch to a YouTube video that accompanies the lesson, and then switch back to Word to show the assessment they have created. This format allows the instructor to assess the student’s lesson plan by looking at all of its components without having to switch back and forth between programs.
  • Collaborative Learning Groups. Students working in collaborative learning groups could use SlideDog to share information with each other and interactive with each other live. Students could share their portions of PowerPoint presentations with each other and give live feedback to each other in real time. Students could also share websites and other resources that they have found for the project and chat with each other at the same time.
