Technology Teaching Tools

Technology Teaching Tools are short, online, asynchronous modules highlighting a technology teaching tool along with relevant pedagogical implementation strategies. Some of the CIRT Technology Tools discussed below rely on freeware downloads. Prior to utilizing these technologies, you are encouraged to understand the potential risks associated with freeware; see the article "Why Free Software Downloads Aren't Always Safe" for an overview of key considerations.

Kahoot

  • Kahoot is a way to create learning games in minutes, made from a series of multiple-choice questions. Add videos, images, and diagrams to your questions to amplify engagement!  Kahoots are best played in a group setting, like a classroom. Players answer on their own devices, while games are displayed on a shared screen to unite the lesson – creating a ‘campfire moment’ – encouraging players to look up. Social learning promotes discussion and pedagogical impact… whether players are in the same room or on the other side of the globe! After a game, encourage players to create and share their own kahoots to deepen understanding, mastery, and purpose.

Pedagogical Ideas

In the classroom, Kahoots can be used in a variety of ways. Some ideas include the following:

  • Quiz – Instructors can create quizzes regarding course content that allows participants to earn points. This is a game that is played collaboratively with other students by using their cell phones or laptops, so can be done in person or abroad. This can help to enhance student satisfaction with the learning experience, foster test preparation, and be used as a study guide.
  • Discussion – Students can connect globally and interact remotely with each other through the Kahoot platform. This will foster relationships between students and teachers. The use of this tool can also enhance instruction as well as the ability to share and present information in a real time face-to-face format, but through technology. This can be great for instructors to connect with learners, and provide additional information about course materials and expand concepts within the classroom.
  • Survey - is a method that can be used for instructors to obtain feedback from learners about a concept. This tool can be used to determine areas in which students may be struggling with and create quizzes, games, and materials that can be shared through Kahoot to solidify learning concepts. This tool also allows instructors to obtain feedback from learners about their current ability in understanding the information being presented.
  • Formative Assessment - Through the quiz feature, instructors can test personal knowledge, and evaluate and assess student understanding and learning of information through formative assessments. This can help to create a personalized learning experience as an instructor can address individually with students areas of opportunity for learning.

Hi, Everyone! I tried this site today and it was very easy to sign up and get started. The site is easy and intuitive and I chose to prepare a short quiz to pop into my forum that would highlight the requirements of an essay. However, after I prepared two multiple choice questions and options, the system told me that the responses were too long. It is difficult to capture our content and to make the quiz meaningful if the length requirement is restricted. Upon first entering the site, there is a video image of young children, so it seems that is their target audience. Nevertheless, if you want something quick and fun with brief answers, I suggest trying this.
