Technology Teaching Tools

Technology Teaching Tools are short, online, asynchronous modules highlighting a technology teaching tool along with relevant pedagogical implementation strategies. Some of the CIRT Technology Tools discussed below rely on freeware downloads. Prior to utilizing these technologies, you are encouraged to understand the potential risks associated with freeware; see the article "Why Free Software Downloads Aren't Always Safe" for an overview of key considerations.

  • Google Hangouts is a free program that allows for video conferencing, send messages with a group, and make free phone calls. The video feature has drawing and effect capabilities to add to the conversation.

Pedagogical Ideas

In the online classroom modality, faculty members can use Google Hangouts in the following ways:

  • Free video conference call – Faculty and online students can meet face-to-face for free and discuss concepts in live time.
  • Free phone calls- Adjunct faculty can use Google Hangouts as their means for contacting students without having to use their personal phone. This can personalize the learning experience for students and allow for explanations over the phone.
  • Group project usage for students- Faculty can recommend that students use Google Hangouts for their group collaborative efforts.
