Technology Teaching Tools

Technology Teaching Tools are short, online, asynchronous modules highlighting a technology teaching tool along with relevant pedagogical implementation strategies. Some of the CIRT Technology Tools discussed below rely on freeware downloads. Prior to utilizing these technologies, you are encouraged to understand the potential risks associated with freeware; see the article "Why Free Software Downloads Aren't Always Safe" for an overview of key considerations.

Flashcard Machine

  • Flashcard Machine is a free application that helps with the creation of classroom study flashcards or even creating learning flashcards for oneself. They do ask for donations, if possible. Ads appear on the free version. Access is available to a database of many existing and available card sets from other users, so getting started is easy. Most existing cards seemed to be more for the K-12 classroom, but cards could be created at the post-secondary level. It seems to be a good tool for teachers or instructors to create materials to upload to their classrooms or use in a face-to-face setting with their students.

Pedagogical Ideas

In the classroom Flashcard Machine can be used in ways such as the following

  • Short review or study guides for different assignments
  • Brief Q & A assignments that could be counted as participation
  • Folders can be created or eliminated for personal use.
  • Glossaries of key terms and phrases can be created for use with students.
  • Audio files can be done in one of two ways. Either upload a previously recorded audio file to be used in the flash card maker, or record directly when the cards are being created.
