It is our challenge as online instructors to keep up with students and use active learning strategies designed to engage them in the classroom. After all, the key to learning is student engagement and one of the ways to increase student engagement is by flipping the traditional classroom with the "flipped" approach. While developed for the traditional classroom, the flipped approach is a natural for the online classroom since rather than having instructors lecture, short videos are used instead to present material allowing classroom time for discussion of the video contents. While the threaded discussions themselves may be used for active learning, incorporating videos into these threads can result in a guided lesson to spark further in-depth discussion. Students can be asked to provide a summary of the video and then process it back and forth with their classmates in the threads.
