Do you have an idea for a paper to disseminate your research or good practice? Have you presented on teaching, learning or assessment at a conference but have had nothing published from it? Would you like some supportive and constructive feedback on your academic writing? Would you like your colleagues to read about what you are doing without prejudicing future publishing copyright?
Why not submit your work for publication in the University's Journal?
In addition, you might like to submit more informal 'soapbox' pieces, cartoons, book reviews, letters or short papers (2000-3000 words) on your research and/or practice, e.g. case studies or action research projects.
Publishing in the JPD will qualify you to be considered for our next writing retreat to be held in April 2012.
Alternatively you may have comments to make on issues rasied by articles and books in the first edition of the JPD, or on matters arising from the University conference. We would like to hear your views!
Pieces by new writers and early career researchers, as well as experienced colleagues, are welcome. If you are interested in submitting a piece but are not sure what is required, please contact Andrea Raiker and David Mathew by e-mail or by phone on extensions 4071 and 3064.
The Journal of Pedagogic Development has an ISSN of 2047-3265 for referencing purposes.
Pieces by new writers and early career researchers as well as experienced colleagues are welcome. From 2012 the Journal will be published three times a year. Being published in the JPD gives you automatic admission into the review process for the University's annual Writing Retreat.
Original contributions (not previously published, whether hard or soft copy) are welcomed.
Papers should have an abstract of 150 to 250 words. After the abstract, please supply a list of keywords, up to a maximum of 10.
All papers must be accompanied by a covering page detailing:
Papers will be reviewed and either:
Any paper that was previously published in a language other than English will be considered if submitted in an English translation suitable for publication.
When submitting a paper, the author must confirm:
The maximum length for manuscripts is 3,000 words. This does not include the abstract, and references, figures or tables are counted as 250 words for each item occupying a half-page, or 500 words for a full page. If your manuscript is longer than this, please contact either Andrea Raiker or David Mathew for confirmation.
Authors are responsible for obtaining permission from the copyright owner to reproduce any previously published material within their manuscript. If the manuscript contains previously published material (including quotations, poetry, song lyrics and pictures), authors will be asked to provide evidence that permission to republish has been given.
Preparation of the manuscript.
We don't mind what Font style or size you prefer, but if you are submitting in hard copy we would rather it wasn't anything too zany, and a Font size larger than 10 would be appreciated. If you are submitting in hard copy, please use double-spacing throughout, including quotations, footnotes and references, with at least 25mm margins all round. Page numbers should be included at the bottom right of each page. (If you are submitting in hard copy and your paper is accepted, we will ask for an electronic copy in due course.)
Footnotes should be kept to the minimum required. Please do not use footnotes to provide bibliographical references (these should be at the end of your paper). Footnotes must be numbered consecutively. Where extended background is required, the information can be included as an appendix, with a reference to the appendix placed appropriately in the text.
Please check quotations carefully for accuracy, and page numbers from source material must be supplied. All insertions into the original text should be displayed in square brackets, for example, 'he [Magoo] regards…'
Italics in the original must be shown. Any additional emphasis in quoted matter should be indicated in the manuscript by adding the phrase '(my italics)' in round brackets after the quotation. Three dots should be used for indicating omissions in the quoted text, for example, 'This…is a good idea'.
References in the text are given by quoting the author's name followed by the year of publication in round brackets, for example, Magoo (2008) or (Magoo, 2008). If two co-authors are cited, both names should be given, for example, Magoo and Ripe (2009) or (Magoo and Ripe, 2009). If more than two co-authors are cited, the reference in the text should take the form of, for example, Magoo et al. (2010) or (Magoo et al., 2010).
Reference to works cited in the text should be given at the end of the paper. Authors are listed in the references in alphabetical order, and their works in chronological order of the date of publication. If more than one work published in the same year by an author is listed, these should be followed by a, b, c etc. When an author is listed both as a single and as a (first) co-author, references to single authorship should precede joint ones.
Please capitalise titles as in the original source material.

Reference to a volume in multivolume works: Surname First initial (Date) Title of multivolume work. Vol. 1: Name of specific volume. Place of publication: Name of publisher.
