Dr. Galyna Kufryk, professor of biology at CSET, presented on bioengineering of cyanobacterial strains for hydrogen production at the  International Symposium on Phototrophic Prokaryotes in Vancouver (August 5-9). 

Hydrogen is the cleanest and most energy dense biofuel that can be produced by living organisms using the energy of sunlight. Cyanobacteria are among the best species for bioproduction of hydrogen as they capture the carbon dioxide in the process and help reduce concentration of this atmospheric pollutant. 

Genetic engineering of cyanobacteria helps increase hydrogen production and create the strains suitable for biotechnological and industrial applications.
